The Story of Beautiful Girl

Aptly title novel by Rachel Simon, this was a great read about two residents of an institution in 1968, a deaf black man and a pregnant girl, who flee the horrors. Soon after taking shelter with the newly-born baby in the farmhouse of a lonely widow, the authorities find them. She is captured, the man flees and the widow hides the baby. A forty year journey through their lives.

  1. This book was beautifully written with the simplicity of the characters. As a mother of a disabled daughter it pulled at my heartstrings and had me counting my blessings that institutions have closed. This book values the humblest of humanity with warmth and compassion. A must read for those who are educated and not yet educated into the world of the disabled.
